About

At the Business Sustainability Collaborative, we make the case for real, good business: the sustainable practices that benefit people, the planet and the bottom line.

Real. Good. Business.

The Business Sustainability Collaborative is an academic initiative at NC State that brings together students, leading faculty and the business community to redefine how business success is measured.

Our world-class teaching and research reveal how social, environmental and financial performance, taken together, offer deeper insight into the good that businesses do. And we connect students and faculty with real-world companies to put sustainable practices into action.

“Business sustainability” isn’t a buzzword; it’s a long-term strategy to drive innovation and competitive advantage, grounded in fairness and accountability. Sustainable businesses are more profitable and less exposed to risk — and they create value not just for their shareholders, but for their communities.

A Leader in the B Corporation Movement

B Corporations (or benefit corporations) are for-profit companies that seek to have a positive impact on society, their workers, the environment and the wider world. B Corporations are certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of performance, accountability and transparency. Today, there are around 2,500 B Corporations worldwide, as well as hundreds of universities supporting the movement through teaching and research.

NC State’s Business Sustainability Collaborative is among the global leaders in the field. Through our innovative B Corp Clinic, we link talented students with aspiring B Corporations for the benefit of both. Students get a semester-long consulting experience with up-and-coming companies; and those same companies get access to cutting-edge insights from the world of business sustainability.

212 Student Consultants

Over the last three years, students from across seven universities worked on more than three dozen sustainability projects for real-world businesses through our B Corp Clinic.
