Gina Miani’s friends used to ask her why she was studying accounting. “You’re so passionate about the environment, shouldn’t you study something more closely related?,” they’d ask her. But Miani, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting at the NC State University’s Poole College of Management, always told them that perhaps one day she would use her business mindset for good. Three years after graduating, (Jenkins MAC 2017), Miani has found herself — through personal initiative — doing exactly that.

The Gift of a Lifetime: Poole College of Management reflects on 10 years since the Poole Family Endowment

On a cold morning in December 2010, Nelson Auditorium was filled with students, faculty, staff, community members, college supporters and local reporters as an historic gift was announced. Lonnie C. Poole, Jr., founder of Waste Industries, and his wife, Carol Johnson Poole, shared their intent to donate $40 million to the university –– $37 million of which was designated to fund an endowment to support the College of Management, now named the Lonnie C. Poole Jr. College of Management. The endowment was the largest gift given to NC State in school history, and, in an interview with the Triangle Business Journal, Chancellor Randy Woodson shared it would “elevate our ability to have one of the most competitive business colleges in the country.”

After learning about Poole College of Management’s B Corp Clinic, she jumped at the opportunity to participate. Winners Announced for the Social and Environmental Impact Category of NC State’s 2020 Lulu eGames

The Lulu eGames, NC State’s largest annual startup competition, draws the attention of student and faculty entrepreneurs from across campus. This year 130+ entrepreneurs entered the competition to battle for over $100,000 in award money. A group of volunteer judges hand-picked 19 finalist teams to advance to the second round of our highly competitive startup competition. For the first time since its inception in 2009, ten final round winners were announced virtually via a Facebook Live video stream on April 8, 2020. Student teams walked away with anywhere from $2,000 to $15,000.
