BUSINESS LEADERS SUPPORT SUSTAINABILITY IN NORTH CAROLINA

In a statement released Nov. 27, 2012, more than 100 North Carolina businesses have expressed support for sustainability efforts as good for business and NC’s economy. Signatories include large corporations like Duke Energy, SAS, and Ingersoll Rand, as well as well-respected local firms like Harrington Bank, Eastern Carolina Organics, and Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants & Hotels.  The statement and complete list of signatories are published below.

Statement of Support

As leaders of businesses big and small in North Carolina, we support the principles of sustainability in our businesses and in North Carolina’s communities. Access to high-quality education, healthy living, outdoor recreation, green space, arts and culture, community diversity, and affordable living are important drivers that bring top-tier employees to North Carolina. Sustainability has helped our state consistently rank as a leader in terms of quality of life and business opportunity.

Sustainable communities—ones that foster economic growth while also protecting social, cultural, and environmental wellbeing—are critically important to us and to our employees. Our organization and its people value opportunities to be engaged in projects that contribute to our communities and to a healthy environment. And we recognize that the next generation of entrepreneurs, business leaders, and employees—today’s young people—care deeply about sustainability in selecting the businesses they want to work for and the communities they want to live in.

We support North Carolina’s efforts to consider sustainability principles in its urban and rural regional planning efforts, to invest in sustainable infrastructure improvements, to develop sustainability education programs in K-12 and higher education, and to encourage sustainable innovation and technology advancement in the private sector.
