The Future of the Business Sustainability Collaborative: Empowering Leaders to Drive Sustainable Business Forward

From certificates and career pathways to mentorship and experiential learning, BSC is expanding how education meets impact.

As the Business Sustainability Collaborative (BSC) celebrates ten years of connecting business and sustainability, we’re turning toward a deeper vision. Our goal is to build inclusive pathways for students, alumni, mid-career professionals, and changemakers that fuse education, real-world experience, and professional growth in sustainability.

Graduate Certificate in Business Sustainability

One of BSC’s most significant offerings, the Graduate Certificate in Business Sustainability, equips learners with strategic skills and frameworks to lead sustainable change in organizations.

  • Flexible and stackable: Students can take one course at a time and build toward the full certificate as their schedule allows, a format well-suited for working professionals or those balancing multiple commitments.
  • Applied and project-based: The certificate includes hands-on assignments, real-world case studies, and sustainability consulting elements so that theory translates into practice.
  • Cross-disciplinary relevance: Whether your background is in business, engineering, environmental science, or beyond, the curriculum supports integrating sustainability across functions, from operations to marketing to finance.
  • Bridge to impact networks: Graduates become part of BSC’s broader network of alumni, corporate collaborators, and student associates,  creating opportunities for mentorship, project collaboration, and career connection.

NC State Sustainability Career Development Program

A recently launched program of the BSC, the Sustainability Career Development Program (SCDP) offers a ‘choose your own adventure’ approach to career growth in sustainability. The program helps learners explore sustainability-related careers, gain practical experience, and connect with professionals who are driving change across industries.

  • Flexible tracks: Participants choose among modules, activities, or project-based paths tailored to their interests.
  • Recognition of experiential work: The program recognizes and credits sustainability-focused activities like volunteer projects, speaker events, and internships.
  • Career coaching and advising: It helps students and alumni navigate paths in ESG, social enterprise, sustainable operations, or other impact sectors.
  • Integration with BSC offerings: The SCDP complements the Graduate Certificate and speaker series to create a cohesive support ecosystem.

Career Speaker Series: Connection in Action

The BSC Career Speaker Series is a cornerstone of the Collaborative’s industry engagement efforts, designed to connect students with professionals who are shaping sustainability across sectors.

Through panels, fireside chats, and interactive Q&A sessions, speakers share their real-world experiences, from transitioning into sustainability roles to leading impact initiatives within major corporations, startups, and nonprofits. These events give students and alumni a candid look at the diverse career paths that sustainability can take.

Beyond the Speaker Series, the Alumni Profiles showcase how NC State graduates are applying sustainable business principles in the real world, from innovative startups to global corporations. The series highlights how alumni are turning sustainability education into action, from launching impact-driven ventures to advancing ESG strategies in major companies. Each story reveals that there’s no single path to making a difference, only a shared commitment to redefining what business can achieve.

Looking Ahead

These evolving offerings reflect BSC’s commitment not just to pass on knowledge, but to build sustainable careers. In the coming years, we will continue to refine and align these programs, ensuring they respond to real industry demand, support diverse learners, and cultivate leadership across sectors.

As always, the core of our work remains the same: turning purpose into practice, equipping people to lead in sustainable ways, and building bridges between academics and impact. To stay connected with upcoming opportunities, visit Business Sustainability Collaborative
