Empowering the Future: My Summer Internship with Deriva Energy
Written by Grace Agnello, BSC Associate
My name is Grace Agenello and I am a senior at NC State University, majoring in Natural Resources Policy and Administration with a minor in Renewable Energy Assessment. I grew up in Charlotte, NC, and I am passionate about corporate sustainability, renewable energy, green building, and environmental policy. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with Deriva Energy (formerly Duke Energy Renewables) as a Development Intern on their Greenfield Development Team.
During my time with Deriva Energy, my role focused on utilizing GIS tools to identify new opportunities for utility-scale solar projects in the MISO region. I also conducted an in-depth research project on renewable energy development on U.S. Tribal and BLM lands, which I presented at the conclusion of my internship.
Beyond my core responsibilities, I had the opportunity to explore the renewable energy field through a variety of experiences. I visited a solar farm, crafted a strategic deck for a new prospecting state, engaged in cross-functional meetings, evaluated M&A sites, and shadowed a wind developer to gain insights into late-stage development.
This internship not only provided me with hands-on experience but also deepened my understanding of the energy industry. As I head into my final year at NC State, I am excited to carry the knowledge and skills I acquired at Deriva Energy with me on my journey toward a career in renewable energy and sustainability.
