BSC Career Speaker Series Profile: Haley Cook

Haley is a western North Carolina native, and earned her Environmental Engineering degree from NC State in 2017. She enjoys gardening and recently finished an Undergraduate Horticulture Certificate with NC State. Haley has experience both in private work as a consultant as well as with AmeriCorps before transitioning to Charlotte Water. After earning her Professional Engineering license, Haley was promoted to Project Manager, and now serves as a  Senior Project Manager for Charlotte Water’s Design and Construction team. She oversees design of water and sewer pipe extensions, but has also supported various initiatives at Charlotte Water, including Sustainability, Electrification, facility improvements, and general in-house design efforts. Haley strongly believes that working for the City provided her the opportunity to engineer real change and make a difference in her community. Her commitment shows a passion for learning at any opportunity.

Key Career Advice:

  • Emphasizes the importance of professional curiosity. Asking questions whenever possible to help better understand information.
  • Often sustainability is advertised using large scale solutions; however, Haley stressed that any small change can be just as impactful.
  • Stakeholder engagement is a skill that many need to learn. Take opportunities to participate in meetings with executives to not only better understand their needs, but to figure out how best to “sell” important initiatives.
  • Community service gives you a great window into the needs of the people around you. Often our work with sustainability is influenced by the needs of our community.
