I recently completed the course Sustainable Operations Management during the Spring 2025 semester. It served as an excellent introduction to both supply chain management and sustainability principles, offering a solid foundation in key theories and real-world applications. Through a mix of case studies, simulations, and class discussions, we explored critical issues in sustainable supply chains and how companies are actively addressing them. The course gave me valuable insights and practical ideas I can apply to sustainability challenges at my own organization.

One of the course’s most compelling aspects was its focus on real-world examples. From the outset, we analyzed companies such as IKEA and Tyson, examining how they integrate sustainability into their supply chain decisions. These case studies helped build a framework for evaluating supply chain practices and identifying the steps necessary to mitigate risk and promote long-term resilience.

The simulations were a highlight for me, offering an opportunity to apply classroom concepts in a hands-on environment. These exercises allowed us to see the real-time consequences of our decisions and reinforced the lessons from earlier discussions. It was one of the most immersive and practical components of the course.

I believe this course is a strong addition to the sustainability certificate, as it addresses both environmental considerations and the essential role businesses play in driving change. I would recommend taking this course before enrolling in MBA 540: Principles of Operations in Supply Chain Management, as the material in Sustainable Operations Management provides a helpful head start and deepens your understanding going into more advanced topics.
